New Old Friend

New Old Friend

People have come and gone, some with a lot of love, others with a lot of time.
Yet you, my trusted companion, remain my oldest friend.

I admire your constant presence and confidence,
Yet I yearn, for a new old friend to come along,
And learn all that you’ve learned,
Through the ink blots, teardrops, and coffee stains
I’ve left all over you.

For years and years,
I’ve shown you sorrow, shown you joy
Each memory I’ve engraved onto you,
Built me, in the flesh

Oh oldest friend, time is all we know together.
It’s time to learn time again, but with someone new.

Lean in, new friendly face
Lock eyes and let conversation brim from our lips!

We sing songs of the same tune,
But you know not of all my old lyrics,
And I, none of yours.

There’s harmony in our companionship,
And I lust to know all the words before our song ends.

Our song may never end, but New Old Friend,
You will never know me as lovingly as my Oldest Old Friend.

Our old songs are still unknown to one another,
A few lyrics we may uncover by and by.
But our melody hums on, in sync with the beat of time

And perhaps the next verse,
Is meant to be sung together.
